#Wepener9: Residents demand more officers to be deployed - VIDEO─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:25 Tue, 07 Dec 2021
As the bail hearing of the nine accused in Wepener is in process, angry protesters are outside the Local Magistrate's Court with a list of demands.
The nine suspects, with another six to be arrested still, are inside the court applying for bail while their supporters have delivered a memorandum to the town’s Magistrate's Court. Among the things the protestors want, is more police officers to be deployed to the town for increased safety.
The nine suspects are charged with kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice. It is alleged they kidnapped and assaulted people who allegedly have been robbing stores in the town.
OFM News previously reported about the increased police presence with which the protesters were met outside at court. The protesters are calling for the dismissal of the case, as they believe the suspects have restored safety in the town. The nine suspects, including a few that still need to be arrested, are accused of kidnapping three males, assaulted them and left one victim motionless. The suspects allegedly moved the body of the victim and buried it along the R26 road between Wepener and Hobhouse. The discovery of the decomposed body was made by the police after four of the nine suspects took the police to the scene.
