South Africa has identified 6 381 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24-hours, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 3 038 075. This increase represents a 26.4% positivity rate.

A further nine Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89 975 to date.

According to the NICD: “The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (70%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (10%). The Western Cape accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga accounted for 5%; Limpopo accounted for 3%; Free State and North West each accounted for 2%; Eastern Cape and Northern Cape each accounted for 1%.”

Team climb Kilimanjaro to raise funds

According to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO), rich nations have in the last four months given more Covid-19 vaccine booster shots than poorer countries have given in terms of doses all year.

It’s this vaccine inequity that saw a team of mountain climbing enthusiasts come together to climb Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, to raise funds to contribute towards the purchase of vaccines, as well as to raise awareness on the need for developed countries to free the supply chains to allow Africa to access the much-needed vaccines.
