AG exposes rot in NW Health | News Article

The cash-strapped North West Department of Health, which is currently under administration for its poor handling of finances and other administration issues, has once again been singled out in the latest report by the Auditor-General (AG).

The AG, Tsakani Maluleke, in her report exposed the department for its mishandling of millions of rands on contractors, amongst others.

In her report, she says following an investigation, it was revealed that the department unduly paid R9,4 million to a contractor who was set to renovate the Mmabatho Nursing College. Maluleke says the contractor was paid this said amount of money without services being rendered and that this should be recovered from the supplier.

Meanwhile, Maluleke further raised issues on the unfair procurement process resulting in overpricing during the tender evaluation process for a R10,3 million maintenance contract. She says a bidder was disqualified at the functionality stage even though they met all the requirements.

“If the bidder had not been incorrectly disqualified, they could have won the contract at a cost of R3,3 million less than the winning bidder. No benefit from cost the construction of the Jouberton Community Health Centre was significantly delayed. The contractor was paid additional extension-of-time payments of R4 million, above the total amount approved for such extensions. This will be a material financial loss if not recovered from the contractor. Status: The accounting officer is taking appropriate action to resolve these MIs,” she adds.

OFM News previously reported that the department once again received the biggest stake of the provincial budget when Finance MEC, Motlalepula Rosho, tabled her Provincial Adjustment Budget for the 2021/22 financial year.
