Mangaung announces its Mayco─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:58 Fri, 10 Dec 2021
The Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality has announced its Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs).
The municipality’s mayor, Mxolisi Siyonzana, on Thursday announced his Mayoral Committee (Mayco) with some notable and questionable decisions. The former deputy Mayor, Molefi Morake, is now an MMC of infrastructure whilst the former MCC for Transport, Patrick Monyakoane, failed to make his comeback into the Mayco.
The decision to include a Patriotic Alliance (PA) councillor, Kevin van der Ross, who was appointed as the MMC for Human Settlements, is notable. In 2006, Van der Ross was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for racketeering, related to drug dealings.
The ruling ANC retained the metro with a margin of 50,63% and this gave them 51 seats in the council. During the voting at the inauguration, a few opposition parties voted with the ruling party. Despite this, some of the opposition parties in council voted with the ANC against the DA and EFF, among others. The Mayco consists of six women and four men.
