Attempted sale of stolen #Eskom cables thwarted─── 07:47 Tue, 14 Dec 2021
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has opened a criminal case following the discovery of an electrical cable, worth R1.2 million.
Following a preliminary investigation it was discovered that the cable belongs to Eskom, and was reportedly stolen to be sold to the municipality.
The cable doesn't match any standard municipal connections, and was supposed to be taken back to the supplier. That's how it was discovered that the cable was not purchased, and instead stolen from Eskom.
Speaking to OFM News, the newly-inaugurated Matjhabeng Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, confirmed a criminal case has been opened and investigations are being conducted internally to find the culprits, as they are believed to be municipal officials operating a syndicate.
Khalipha was speaking on Tuesday at the “First 100 Days” launch programme, which will focus on cleaning towns in the municipal jurisdiction. Particular focus will be given to sewers and roads.
The Mayor added that by-laws and policies will be drafted, and ensured they are adhered to. He concluded by saying his administration will deal harshly with corruption and lazy staff in the municipality.
