New #Covid19 variant driving FS infection rate | News Article

The rate of new Covid-19 infections in the Free State is driven by the Omicron variant.

This is according to the Free State Department of Health.

The departmental spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, confirms that the Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, previously conceded that the variant is in the province and is dominant in new cases.

Mvambi has urged those that are travelling or not, to take care of themselves and to be vigilant.

Phaahla said all provinces including the Free State are now dealing with the fourth wave of Covid-19.

Phaahla, however, said that the number of Covid-19 infections has now surpassed the peaks of the three previous waves.

OFM News previously reported that Mangaung was leading in the Free State with the most daily infections, followed by Lejweleputswa and Fezile Dabi, which are on par with Thabo Mofutsanyana and Xhariep.

OFM News also previously reported on the effect the new rate of infection had on government institutions like police stations as well as Mangaung Metro's entity and power utility Centlec and Bophelo House.

Numerous police stations in the province, including in Mangaung, have been forced to shut for decontamination processes following confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Also, a surge in Covid-19 cases at Centlec led to the utility failing to respond to power failures and complaints.

The provincial department previously confirmed that scores of healthcare workers have tested positive for Covid-19, as an indication of a fourth wave is gaining momentum.
