A 41-year-old man residing in Lerome village outside Rustenburg is currently in police custody for the alleged assault and rape of his estranged wife earlier this week.

North West police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, says the accused will appear before the Mogwase Magistrates’s Court - under which Lerome village falls - on Monday 3 January, in connection with the vicious incident which occurred on Wednesday 29 December 2021.

It is alleged that the 41-year-old accused drove to his in-laws under the auspices of discussing an urgent matter. After picking the victim up from her parent’s home, he drove to the couple’s martial home in Lerome village.

According to Funani upon pair's arrival in Lerome, an argument broke out and “the husband allegedly assaulted and strangled the wife with a rope, then poured her with petrol and eventually raped her”. He forced her back into his car afterward and drove away with her.

It is then that she managed to unlock the car door and jump out of the moving vehicle. She was assisted by a stranger walking along the road, who then accompanied her to the police station where she laid charges of attempted murder and rape against her husband. He was arrested on Thursday, 30 December 2021.

The North West police have condemned the gender based violence incident and vow to continue to clamp down on the crime.
