Free State Health Department spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says the washing machine burst into flames. 

No injuries were reported and the fire was contained by firefighters before it could spread, leaving only the laundry room damaged. 

Mvambi says even though the fire was quickly brought under control “it is anticipated from the early assessments that the damage might be severe”. 

The estimated cost of damage is unknown at this stage but is being determined by the relevant parties.

Meanwhile, the rest of the hospital is back to normal and services are being rendered. No other section of the hospital - other than the laundry room - was affected by the incident.
