The Free State saw an increase in the number of recorded aircraft accidents over the past three years, according to the annual report of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).
The latest report that reviews the performance of the authority for the 2020/21 financial year shows that there have been 12 incidents in the Free State alone. The SACAA is responsible for investigating all aircraft accidents and incidents across the country. According to the report, there have been 7 accidents in the two previous financial years. In the period under review – from 2018 to 2021 – the three provinces that recorded an increase in accidents are Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the Free State.
SACAA indicated in its report that its goal is to reduce the number of accidents by 50% over the next five financial years. Their main concern is the loss of life as a result of aircraft accidents. In a total of 97 accidents that happened nationally during the year under review, 16 accidents had fatalities. A total of 30 serious incidents were reported from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021, which is a 45% decrease in the number of serious incidents recorded compared to the 2019/20 financial year.
Gauteng recorded the highest number of accidents in the past financial year. The lowest number of accidents were investigated in the Northern Cape
