Man arrested for unpolished diamonds, impersonating police officer─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 10:37 Sun, 09 Jan 2022
The SAPS' Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, the Hawks, have arrested a 53-year-old suspect in the Northern Cape on allegations of fraud, corruption, possession of unpolished diamonds and impersonating a police officer.
According to the Hawks’ Nomthandazo Mnisi, a complainant alleges that during December 2021, six suspects, who claimed to be police officials, deceived him during an alleged diamond transaction.
It is further alleged that these suspects demanded R50 000 in order for him not to be arrested. The complainant immediately paid R10 000.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Pofadder Magistrate's Court on Monday, 10 January. More arrests have not been ruled out.
“A case was then reported to the Hawks' offices and a buy and burst operation was conducted. One suspect came to collect R10 000 and he was therefore arrested. The suspect was also found in possession of five unpolished diamonds.”
