A viral social media post in which a Bloemfontein dad makes disparaging remarks about educators affiliated with the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) has elicited outrage from all corners of the Free State education sector.
On Wednesday, Tshediso Mangope, like so many other parents in the country, proudly posted a picture on Facebook of his son’s first day at an elite Bloemfontein boy’s school. The only difference was that his caption for the picture took things in another direction, with him adding that “no magwinya and archaar eating Sadtu person will teach my children”.
To add further insult to injury, Mangope later posted a picture of an unknown group of women in a swimming pool making unsavoury gestures, calling them Sadtu teachers in Sesotho. Whilst the posts have since been deleted, the union’s Free State branch is now calling on action to be taken against Mangope, who reportedly works at the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).
Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has also condemned Mangope’s posts calling them racist, sexist and a “blatant abuse of our teachers who have contributed immensely to the education of our children, especially the historically disadvantaged learners,” says Makgoe. The Education MEC says the Free State is one of the best performing provinces in the country with respect to matric results, thanks to the educators Mangope insults.
