The Free State has seen a significant drop in the number of registered sex offenders from 2020 to 2021.

According to the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola’s response to a question posed on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group’s (PMG) website, 19 convicted sexual offenders were placed on the National Register for Sex Offenders in 2021 in the Free State, as compared to 28 in 2020. The province’s central South African counterparts, North West and Northern Cape, on the other hand, saw an increase in registered offenders in the above stated period.

According to Lamola’s response, the number of registered sex offenders in the North West province increased by 9, and by 2 in the Northern Cape in this same period. Between the time when the electronic registry was initiated in 2017 and 2021, over 3000 convicts have been registered on the system. The bulk of these offenders come from KwaZulu-Natal, followed by the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and the Free State.
