Learning, teaching in the spotlight in NW─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:14 Mon, 17 Jan 2022
The Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Education is on Monday in the North West for an oversight visit following the reopening of schools in the province for the 2022 academic year.
The North West is amongst provinces across the country which have been under heavy scrutiny for failing to deal with scholar transport issues for pupils in rural areas, amongst others. The Department of Education in the province has been criticised for failing to ensure school safety at schools and dealing with theft and vandalism at schools.
OFM News previously reported that the Education Department was one of the two departments that respectively received R14.1 billion and R18 billion to cover their high salary bill and to deliver services. Delivering her speech in 2021 at the Provincial Legislature, Motlalepula Rosho explained that the Education Department has to strengthen its fight against the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Education’s budget will, amongst others, also make provision for the school feeding programme, for the Sanitary Dignity Project, as well as for infrastructure development.
The committee will on Wednesday head to the Free State to assess their readiness for the 2022 academic year.
