Armed men steal cables from Klerksdorp water station─── 17:33 Tue, 25 Jan 2022
Residents of Matlosana in the North West have been advised to use water sparingly.
This, as the municipality's water main in Ellaton suffered vandalism and cable theft Wednesday morning.
According to municipal media liaison officer, Kelebogile Moleko, it is reported that a group of heavily armed men broke into the pump station and started attacking and overpowering municipal security personnel.
Moleko said the group vandalised high voltage cables and control panels.
Manzilpark, Hartebeesfontein, Tigane, Freemanville, Jouberton, Alabama, and Meiringspark will experience water shortages as a result.
Speaking to OFM News, Moleko said a case has been opened with the police and the two security guards are in critical conditions at hospital.
The municipality estimates to re-install the stolen and vandalised cables will take at least four days; water tankers will also be made available to residents.
