The North West-based municipality, the City of Matlosana, is pleading with residents to work together with police and the municipality to stop cable theft and vandalism, as it cost the municipality millions of rands.

This week only, thieves have stolen cables on three consecutive days in Ellaton, Jouberton, and Khuma.

Speaking to OFM News, the MMC for Electrical Engineering, Fikile Mahlophe, says the general belief was that zama-zamas are behind the crime, but it seems this is a syndicate.

Mahlophe says a vehicle that was found at Khuma ready to be loaded by the thieves, is registered in one of the suburbs in Klerksdorp.

OFM News reported this week that two security guards are in critical condition in hospital after they were overpowered and beat by armed men who stole cables at an Ellaton water pump station.

"We will target illegal scrapyards and visit them for oversight, this is as we believe most of the time they are buyers, even the legal one that doesn't have the right compliance in place, so that we know what they buy on a regular basis," said Mahlophe.

Mahlophe has also promised that the municipality will light up the streets with solar lights that have cameras, to help identify those who carry out such crimes.
