FS roads in spotlight again─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:28 Wed, 02 Feb 2022
The state of the Free State’s roads will be in the spotlight again following an introduction of the Pavement Management and Assessment Project at Lengau Testing Center in Bloemfontein earlier this week.
The state of provincial roads has been under scrutiny for a long time. The spokesperson for Police, Roads, and Transport in the Free State, Hillary Mophethe, says the project will assist the department to have a clear understanding of all the challenges surrounding the road networks in the province. She said that Free State MEC William Bulwane was accompanied by the acting Head of the Department (HOD), Robinson Thekiso, and Roads Chief Director, Freddie Tokwe, earlier this week to launch the project at the Lengau Testing Center.
“The collection of road network data will assist in understanding and documenting the conditions of the roads for both paved and gravel roads, and also gives indications of what type of maintenance activities are required on which sections of the road,” adds Mophethe.
She further said that the collection of data will be executed by vehicles that are equipped with laser technology for automatic crack detection and surface layer conditions, Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) meter for checking the structural strength of the pavement layers underneath the road, and the Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD) for the continuous deflection on our strategic roads.
