Harmony Mine and the Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, James Tsolela, together with stakeholders in the greater Stilfontein area, met to discuss mine rock dumps and their effect on communities.
The greater Stilfontein includes Khuma township, Vaal Reefs, and Orkney.
The meeting took place yesterday at the municipality's council chamber.
Speaking to OFM News, Tsolela says there have been numerous calls to process the dumped rocks, and now that unity has been formed and one team has been established, they are positive about the change that will come.
Tsolela said a technical task team has been formed and that a memorandum of understanding will be signed in March to guide the waste processing.
OFM News also spoke to community leader, Thembile Botman, who says they are happy that there's a direction at last and hope that this will bring about developments in terms of infrastructure, and create jobs for people of Khuma and surrounding areas.
Tsolela says he encourages everyone to work together in achieving a better waste rehabilitation environment through this project.
