IPID probes Bfn shootout involving cops─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 05:00 Wed, 09 Feb 2022
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is probing a fatal shootout involving police that occurred in the Bloemfontein suburb of Heidedal.
According to IPID, it’s alleged that on Monday police were following up on information that a man driving a silver Polo Vivo in the area was unlawfully in possession of an R5 rifle.
Police tried to stop and search the driver, but the unnamed man sped off. It is alleged that the man picked up the R5 rifle and police quickly retaliated, by shooting in his direction. The Polo Vivo driver lost control of the vehicle, and the officials continued to shoot at him.
He managed to get out of the car, but died from the multiple gunshot wounds he had sustained in the incident.
An R5 with its serial number filed off, two magazines, and 32 R5 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the deceased’s vehicle and taken in.
An autopsy was performed on the body on Tuesday.
The man’s identity is unknown at this stage.
