Learner stabbed at school in Thabong─── 11:33 Sat, 19 Feb 2022
A Valentine's Day ball that was organised by Lephola Secondary School in Thabong, Welkom, ended in one of the learners being stabbed by a fellow learner.
It is alleged that a Grade 10 learner stabbed a Grade 8 learner with a knife on Thursday during the event.
The victim was taken to Bongani Hospital for treatment.
Speaking to OFM News, Thabo Makhetha, the victim's brother, said it was reported that the suspect had allegedly been bullying and harassing other learners with pepper spray the day before this incident occurred. He alleges that nothing was done by the school.
"The same student who stabbed my little brother was harassing other students the previous day; the day before he was harassing them with pepper spray. The school didn't discipline him the next day. He stabbed my brother for no reason.
"I'm holding the Department of Education responsible for this. This is their fault. How can a kid get stabbed in a place where he is supposed to be safe at school?"
Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, confirmed the incident and said a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) was registered at the Thabong Police Station. He says the suspect is on the run and he was not at school on Friday".
OFM News has sent an enquiry to the Department of Education and awaits an official update on the incident.
