NW Health MEC urges pregnant women to use their pre-natal services─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:54 Thu, 03 Mar 2022
The North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha has urged pregnant women to take full advantage of the pre-natal services offered by health institutions to ensure that they deliver healthy babies.
This comes as the Department of Health in North West joins the world on World Birth Defects Day to raise awareness about birth defects, also known as congenital disorders, congenital anomalies or congenital conditions.
According to Sambatha, there are many types of birth defects and this day recognises collective voices raising awareness for all birth defects. He says that an estimated 240 000 new-borns die worldwide every year, within 28 days of birth, due to birth defects. He also says that birth defects are divided into two main types, namely structural disorders, in which problems are seen with the shape of a body part, and functional disorders, in which problems exist with how a body part works. Sambatha said that birth defects can be prevented by vaccinations, the adequate intake of folic acid or iodine through fortification of staple foods or supplementation, and adequate care before and during pregnancy.
