The Free State Government has allocated money from the current financial year to restore the provincial roads to a pothole-free state.

The Free State premier, Sisi Ntombela, made an announcement that over R1 billion has been allocated to constructing over 10 roads in the province. The construction of these roads will create 5 000 job opportunities.

Ntombela also stated R50 million has been allocated to maintenance and repairs of gravel roads; over R22 million has been allocated to the Pothole Repair Programme; and R15 million for vegetation control.

Ntombela’s plans to repair roads do not appear to include the completion of the reconstruction of Moshoeshoe Road in Rocklands, Bloemfontein, after the project has stood still for a while. However, there are projects that will be fast-tracked to be finished by the end of the financial year.

“We regret the inconvenience caused by the poor conditions of these roads, which were abandoned by the contractors,” Ntombela explained. The construction of these roads will create 2 920  jobs.
