Two prisoners die in Kimberley─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:00 Mon, 07 Mar 2022

Two inmates at Kimberley's Tswelopele Correctional Centre in the Northern Cape died, following an alleged attack on an official on Sunday.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, says that three inmates allegedly tried to attack an official with padlocks, whereafter other officials tried to defuse the situation.
He says that in their attempt to try and intervene, a scuffle between prisoners and prison orderlies ensued and this resulted in serious injuries of three inmates.
The injured inmates were referred to different hospitals outside the facility for treatment.
Nxumalo says two prisoners died, while one remains in hospital for extended medical supervision. Nxumalo says the police and the Judicial Inspection for Correctional Services (JICS) were informed of the incident and additional officials were deployed at the centre to bring normality.
Meanwhile, the DCS has launched investigations into the deaths.
