Another FS educator accused of assaulting a learner | News Article

Yet another Free State educator is facing allegations of physically assaulting a learner. This time the alleged perpetrator is the deputy principal of a primary school in the Free State.

According to the written complaint in OFM News’ possession, the alleged assault dates back to 2020, when the deputy head of the school allegedly laid his hands on a minor. The learner isn’t the only one being victimised over the incident.

An educator who bore witness to the incident and tried to put a stop to it, has reportedly also been threatened on the back of complaints surfacing on the matter. But now the South African Council for Educators (SACE) is probing the allegations. The Free State Education Department’s Howard Ndaba, says they are not aware of the issues at this primary school.

SACE has written to the implicated deputy principal – the letter is dated 2 March 2022 - and required him to furnish the Council with his version of the events outlined in the complaint within seven days of receiving the letter. Should the educator not do so, formal proceedings will be instituted against him.

This comes hot on the heels of the suspension of an educator at Hoërskool Wessel Maree in Odendaalsrus owing to a viral video of said teacher violently pushing a learner. The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) in the Free State Province has since brought Hoërskool Wessel Maree to a standstill, picketing at the Odendaalsrus school on Monday.

This is a developing story.
