Police officer and accomplice charged with extortion─── 15:41 Tue, 22 Mar 2022
A police woman and her alleged accomplice, both from Meloding, were meant to appear in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court today on charges of extortion.
It is alleged that earlier this week the woman accused her boyfriend of rape.
The girlfriend allegedly connived with a female police officer to demand R15 000 from her boyfriend so that she would drop the charges.
Police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng has said the police were informed of the incident, after which a sting operation by the Anti-Corruption Unit was organized.
This led to the arrest of the two women - the 41 year old constable from Meloding Police Station, and the 29 year old girlfriend of the complainant.
Thakeng confirmed R5000 cash was found in their possession inside the officer’s office.
