The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is insolvent. This is according to Municipal Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, who was doing a presentation to the National Council of Provinces' (NCOP) select committee in Bloemfontein, Free State.

He says their current liabilities far exceed their current assets. Khalipha says they have, since their election on 1 November 2021, been able to pay the majority of their 3rd party debts pertaining to pension funds and medical aids.

Additionally, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the municipality, Thabo Panyane, mentioned that they have slowly started implementing "sector improvement plans" to better the deteriorating sectors within the municipality. The municipal management seems hopeful about the future of the previously mismanaged municipality.

"We can see that you have inherited an insolvent municipality," the committee's speaker, China Dodovu, reiterated after the sitting.

OFM News' Corn Koteli reported that the municipality plans to pay their debt after making a payment of R15 million towards their R4 billion debt owed to waterboard, Sedibeng Water.

Meanwhile, Khalipha noted that Municipal Manager, Zangisa Tindleni, could not attend the engagement oversight as she is attending court cases against the municipality.

Many political parties present conveyed their support as the newly elected council works to resuscitate the municipality.
