Deputy Minister delivers on promise | News Article

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State is to receive a waste-collection compactor truck on Thursday, during a visit by the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs, Makhotso Sotyu.

Sotyu is expected to be accompanied by the Free State MEC for Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea), Makalo Mohale, and other government officials.

Free State spokesperson for Destea, Tiisetso Makhele, says that the handing over of waste truck is expected to take place at the Matjhabeng Municipal Town Hall in Welkom.

He adds that the handing over of the waste compactor truck to Matjhabeng Local Municipality emanates from Sotyu's visit in 2019 after she was made aware of waste challenges that Matjhabeng was faced with, especially waste collection, recycling and landfill site management.

Makhele says that the hand-over will be followed by a clean-up campaign around Welkom city centre, as part of promoting educational waste awareness, to discourage littering and illegal dumping in open spaces.

Sotyu's visit in the province forms part of activities related to the Pre-presidential Imbizo Build-up Programme or Pre-Imbizo Engagement ahead of the Presidential Imbizo that will be held by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Mangaung on Saturday. OFM News reported on ministers who visited the province in line with their departmental work ahead of the Presidential Imbizo, including the minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, while Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, will be visiting Bloemfontein and Thaba 'Nchu on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Makalo is also expected to meet up with Dlamini-Zuma to convene over issues of the business sector.
