The state of health affairs at Kgakala Clinic outside Wolmaransstad in the Maquassi Hills Municipality in North West is under serious scrutiny.

This after the Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development visited thee clinics here this week. A member of the committee, Gavin Edwards, who led the oversight visits to the clinics says Kgakala had a shortage of staff and keeps running out of medication - with some medication that has expired.

During the oversight visit, Edwards revealed that the clinic does not open on weekends and public holidays and also has no generator or borehole. Edwards has since said he will take up the matter with the MEC for Department of Health, Madoda Sambatha.

The department is yet to respond to OFM News inquiry.

The Portfolio Committee expressed its satisfaction after visiting two other clinics - Bophelo Clinic, in Rulaganyang near Leeudoringstad and Segametsi Magaetsho Clinic.

The committee commended the cleanliness of the facilities, and the turnaround time to serve patients amongst others.

"The second oversight visit was at Segametsi Magaetsho Clinic also in Maquassi Hills and it services a community of about 24000 people with 15 000 files open.

"It caters for antenatal care bookings, baby clinics, chronic diseases like HIV, TB, Hypertension, High Blood, diabetes management. It is well managed under Mr Daniel Magada who is the Operational Manager. The clinic opens  7 days a week from 7am to 7pm.

"The pharmacy is well equipped with all medication supply for illnesses that the clinic is managing. It has a powerful generator that is well maintained to cater for load shedding. Even though it has a borehole the water is contaminated and therefore they are not using it but are sharing water supply with a nearby school whenever there is no water," Edwards added.
