Multi-skilled author publishes first book at age 76─── 08:53 Thu, 12 May 2022
A Bloemfontein poet published her first book at the age of 76. Phlynne Donaldson Fourie tells OFM News that she started pursuing poetry at the age of 12.
Fourie says she titled her book “I’m Only Size 3”, because it was a perfect explanation of her life, as she was a young girl with big responsibilities. She says this relates to her journey of motherhood. This book has reportedly made it to the library of two schools.
She explains that she was 16-years-old when she fell pregnant with her son, and gave birth at the age of 17. In those days it was taboo to be pregnant at that age, which led to society discriminating against her. She says her family could barely afford taking care of the baby.
She narrates how she was separated from her son when he was five years old and she decided to give him to a family member that could afford to give him a better life. As she explained, the relationship between the adoptive family was good until they passed on, and then she started bonding with her son again.
Fourie explains that the purpose of this book is to emphasise to today’s youth how difficult teenage pregnancy is, and the sacrifices one has to make before they are ready for that responsibility.
She further explained that from her archive of over 500 poems, she might be publishing more, as she has met Dr Joseph Besigye Bazirake. She described him as an inspiration to publish her work and leave a legacy for next generations.
