The socio-economic plight faced by Military Veterans have come to the fore, as Deputy President David Mabuza visited North West in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Presidential Task Team on Military Veterans.

Lack of access to critical benefits such as housing, jobs, health, education, burial support, and pensions are among some of the issues continuing to plague the military veterans.

Mabuza led talks relating to planning, monitoring and evaluating challenges of military veterans - together with Deputy Minister of Defence, North West Premier, MECs and Military Veterans.

"I'm aware that the challenges that are faced by our Military Veterans, at time are very complex and multifaceted. They require all of us, provinces, national government and our municipalities to commit to a joint action approach to resolving this challenges, and I am confident that we are going to resolve this, we are going to make progress," said Mabuza.

Mabuza tasked the North West Premier to delegate MECs to convene with representatives of North West military veterans and provide a report that will be provided to the presidential task team. He  said that this will accelerate much needed services for military veterans.

He urged military veterans across the political spectrum to organise themselves and to enable the government to adequately support them. Mabuzahad also previously stated that R654 million meant to assist military veterans wad lying idle in the Department of Defence and not being used because the department has not been working properly.
