ANC Youth League wants embattled FS mayor to step down─── LUCKY NKUYANE 13:47 Tue, 17 May 2022
Calls for the Mayor of the Theunissen-based Masilonyana Municipality, Dimakatso Modise, to step down are gaining traction merely a day after her release from custody.
The Lejweleputswa ANC Youth League regional chairperson, Mokgethi Setlhalefo, says Modise who is also the deputy regional coordinator of the interim structure should do the right thing and step aside as per the ANC’s 54th 2017 Nasrec National Conference.
He has called on the ANC in the region to implement the step aside policy and if she refuses, suspend her. Modise is facing charges of inciting violence in 2021. She was released on R2000 bail after appearing in the Theunissen Magistrate's court yesterday.
Setlhalefo says the Youth League intends to write to the regional interim structure to ask that action be taken against Modise.
“The 54th national conference of the ANC resolution states that when a member of the ANC occupying a position of leadership - whether in government or in the ANC - is charged with a serious offence in terms of the constitution, they should step aside,” he adds.
“We have an understanding that they are still innocent until proven otherwise, but for the sake of the organisation’s integrity and credibility can they be given a chance to clear their names and then should that be the case they could continue to assume their responsibilities,” Setlhalefo adds.
