North West set for economic upliftment | News Article

Sedibelo Platinum Mine management in partnership with North West government hopes to bring a much-needed economic boost to the province.

North West experienced enormous economic shock due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic - which resulted in a decline of 7,6% in the provincial GDP in 2020, also leading to an unemployment rate of 33%.

North West Premier, Bushy Maape, said that the government has been engaging with different stakeholders, particularly in the private sector, to come on board with government to address the challenges of unemployment and poverty that has hit the province hard.

In a statement, he said that the management of the mine has indicated that up to three thousand jobs will be created by the development of an underground mine and of a Kell plant at the Pilanesberg Platinum mine.

Maape welcomed the forthcoming investment of R9.4 billion by Sedibelo Platinum Mine, citing it is a step in the right direction in resuscitating the province's economy.

He further said the government has to do everything in its power deal with high unemployment rate in the province.

Maape had previously explained levels of unemployment as a ticking time-bomb that requires different social partners to work together in finding lasting solutions.
