#NWbudget: Municipalities under scrutiny | News Article

The state of North West municipalities and the level of service delivery to communities - many of whom are at best frustrated with the provincial government - will on Tuesday be under scrutiny.

This as the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; and Human Settlements, Lenah Miga, is set to deliver budget speeches of the two departmental portfolios.

Miga will deliver her maiden budget speeches since assuming office in 2021, after replacing the ousted former MEC Mmloloi Cwaile.

Miga is expected to outline the plans to assist municipalities to accelerate service delivery to communities, and efforts to support traditional leadership.

Ailing and troubled municipalities such as the Lichentenburg-based Ditsobotla and Setlagole-based Ratlou local municipalities and their service delivery issues are expected to feature prominently in her budget speech.

Miga is also expected to outline in detail how the department of Human Settlements will fast-track the delivery of houses and deal with contractors who do not perform.

OFM News previously reported that the committee in the Legislature recently lashed out at the Ratlou Municipality for failing to take action against the Municipal Manager (MM), Chief Finance Officer (CFO), and the procurement officer for alleged corruption involving Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) amounting to R25 million.

Chairperson of the Cooperative Governance committee at the legislature, Aaron Motswana, also previously told OFM News that municipalities are not complying with the legislation which governs them and are also battling with issues, such as irregular expenditure.
