It is reported that the ghost employees’ salaries were paid into several of her personal bank accounts.

According to Hawks spokesperson Christopher Singo, the 57-year old, Modiehi Rebecca Mokoena was arrested in Vereeniging yesterday by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Welkom.

“A preliminary probe conducted by the Department of Education discovered that the suspect who was working as a Human Resource Officer at Fezile Dabi District created ghost employees in the Departments system,” said Singo.

Furthermore, the created ghost employees by using the names of her family members and used several of her personal banking details as though they belonged to the ghost employees.

“As a result of her fraudulent activities, the Department of Education suffered a total loss of R1 million between the years 2006 to 2018.

The court case has been postponed to 24 June 2022 and she was granted R500 bail.
