The Department of Health in the spotlight | News Article

Questions are being raised in parliament about the non-payment of doctors.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of the Portfolio Committee on Health, Michéle Clarke, has posed a question to Minister Joe Phaahla about the number of doctors that have not been paid in each province, and whether doctors have been paid for overtime or not.

In reply, the National Department of health stated they do not have the information readily available, and as a result they will consult with all the Provincial Departments of Health to source the full details on the matter.

The reply further states the Minister will, after receiving the full information from all the Provincial Departments of Health, supply Clarke and the other members of the Parliament with a response. It is at this stage unclear when the National Department of health will receive the information. Clarke’s questions in detail are:

1. What is the number of doctors that have not been paid by the department of health in each province?

2. For what period have they not been paid?

3. Whether doctors have been paid for overtime?

4. if not, in what provinces are overtime payments outstanding?

5. For how long have overtime payments been outstanding?

This is a developing story.
