Free State residents unwilling to relocate─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:00 Tue, 31 May 2022

Residents of flood-prone Mavageng informal settlement in Phumelela municipality in Free State are reluctant to relocate.
This after an EFF member questioned Human Settlements in National Assembly if residents of the informal settlement were relocated to a safer and secure area.
According to the department, a feasibility study completed by Phumelela Local Municipality in Mavageng informal settlement in Vrede indicated that the area is prone to a hundred year flood-line and therefore inhabitable.
The department says the municipality had advised residents of Mavageng to relocate to Thembalihle Ext 14, however, they are reluctant to move.
The department says that Thembalihle Ext 14 has since been allocated to other beneficiaries. However, the department stated that Phumelela municipality has made other provisions for Mavageng residents to be allocated sites in township named Thembalihle Ext 8 which consist of 1 400 plots.
The area is reported to consist of 1 310 residential units, five businesses, seven churches, three schools and 13 streets amongst others.
The department says that municipality has not consulted the occupants on the alternative relocation sites.
