A 17-year-old boy from the Northern Cape has been convicted for aggravated robbery, raping and then murdering an elderly woman.
The Provincial police spokesperson, Olebogeng Tawana, says that the accused was found guilty and sentenced by the Northern Cape High Court this weekend.
He says the accused was handed 15 years' imprisonment for aggravated robbery, 18 years' imprisonment for murder, and 18 years' imprisonment for rape.
Tawana says the sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
Tawana says in July 2021 the boy accosted a 81-year-old woman at her home in Cassel Village where he raped, murdered and robbed her of her belongings.
He says the accused was arrested and the investigating officer successfully opposed bail, and he was kept in police custody until the finalisation of trial.
