A school in the Free State is being recognised for its top-notch feeding scheme.
This school in the Free State, the Thabang Primary School in Bethlehem, feeds hundreds of mouths daily and is standing tall amongst thousands of schools in the country. On Tuesday the school will be rewarded with a fully equipped kitchen worth R700 000.
Tiger Brands and the Department of Education are rewarding the school because it successfully provides daily meals to all learners and adheres to all the general guidelines of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).
“The programme and the school ensure that learners receive a nutritious meal on a daily basis in order to optimise teaching and learning,” says Sharmaine Dunn, Free State coordinator for the NSNP.
She further added that the NSNP recognises the school's excellence, innovation and the dedication in the successful implementation of the programme.
She added that the plans for building the kitchen is already underway and they have hopes for the kitchen to be completed by the end of the year.
“This initiative is very important, because the NSNP benefits all quantile one to three schools, meaning all the poor schools,” she added.
The NSNP in the Free State currently provides almost 600 000 learners meals every school day of the year.
According to Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for Education in the Free State, the deputy minister of Education will be handing over this prize, together with the MEC of Education in the Free State, Tate Makgoe, among other officials.
