Rustenburg residents vow to disrupt mining | News Article

The community of Boitekong in Rustenburg blocked the road to the Sibanye-Stillwater mine, disturbing the early morning shift on Monday.

It's been a tough few months for mining giant Sibanye-Stillwater. Some protesters say they are taking action because the mine is not investing in the mining community.

Others went to the local police station, demanding they deal with the gender-based violence crimes in the area.

The community claims the company continues to benefit from its mining but neglects to invest in employment and business in the area. They want it to change.

eNCA reached out to Sibanye-Stillwater. The company says its engaging with the group and is operating outside of the legal structures.

Not far from the mine, ward 40 of the great Boitekong area delivered a memorandum to the police station.

Protesters have vowed to shut down the police station and the mine until their grievances are met.
