Nama Khoi Productions and the youth from Sandrift in the Richtersveld area of the Northern Cape will today hold a theatrical demonstration outside Alexander Bay, until 16:00.

According to a media statement released by the group, the purpose of the demonstration is to show how various indigenous communities are opposed to the Boegoebaai Green Hydrogen Project, which is a Special Economic Zone planned for the region.

People from the local community will join the fifteen performing activists in the demonstration, which is set to take place outside the venue of a training workshop for the project.

In the statement, a performing arts activist from Sandrift, Geralt Cloete, explains that the government did not consult them about the project and, as far as they know, no meaningful public participation processes were followed.

“We want to be consulted and included in all projects planned in and around our community and on the land of the Nama Khoi people. We will use art as a form of activism and protest, to send a message that this project cannot go ahead without proper consultation and public participation processes. If we have learnt anything from the young people of 1842 and 1976, it is that we must stand up for our rights to be respected as human beings and demand to be included in decisions that will affect us.”
