Water tariff discussions in Northern Cape concerning─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 13:09 Wed, 13 Jul 2022
Looming water tariff increases will soon become one of the major concerns for residents in the Northern Cape and other neighbouring provinces.
This is as the consultations between the Department of Water and Sanitation and other key stakeholders have now started to determine bulk water tarrifs for the 2022/23 financial year.
The spokesperson for Water and Sanitation, Sputnik Ratau, says the meeting between the stakeholders is expected to take place in Upington on 20 July and Kimberley Garden Court on 21 July 2022.
The Northern Cape Director for Institutional Establishment in the Department of Water and Sanitation, Tenda Rasikhanya, says that they will be guided by the National Water Act 36 of 1998, which states that the Minister of Water and Sanitation is required to establish prices for raw water charges. He adds that to be able to supply water at an acceptable level of assurance and quality, capital investment in infrastructure must be available, as well as for operations, maintenance associated with water treatment, bulk water distribution, and reticulation within human settlements.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the spokesperson for Water and Sanitation, Sputnik Ratau, says the pricing of water will be based on user-pay, polluter-pay, ecological sustainability, differentiated charges, accountability, and governance.
