Less privileged kids taught the art of playing golf─── HEIDRÈ MALGAS 14:10 Wed, 13 Jul 2022
Professional golfers and coaches hosted a golf day at the Bloemfontein Golf Club to teach kids from disadvantaged backgrounds the art of playing golf, in an effort to find the next “Ernie Els” or “Tiger Woods”.
Professional golfer, Nico van Rensburg, remarked that because golf is such a fantastic sport in South Africa, the clinic is hunting for a diamond in the rough from disadvantaged backgrounds, who enjoy and have an interest in the sport.
“We bring professional golfers, like Gabrielle Venter, to hit some balls with the kids. Our top coaches, like Hendrik Buhrmann and other coaches, teach the kids how to record themselves when playing, so that wherever they are from, we can coach them online for free,” Van Rensburg said.
He noted that they have a partnership with Vumatel, which provides the kids with free data so that they can take their classes online. Three months later, the coaches then evaluate who had been performing well, and those kids would be given memberships to nearby golf clubs.
“We support them if they need to travel for the lessons to and from Bloemfontein. We also offer these lessons for free because golf coaching is so expensive. We get to nurture them and discover where the next superstar may come from,” he added.
This is the third such clinic to be held, and there will be more this year all around South Africa.
