Environmentalists warn against exploration as ‘oil rig is on its way’─── 12:13 Thu, 14 Jul 2022
Imminent exploration along the Northern Cape coast caused an environmental and social justice lobbying group to again express their concerns that the consultation process regarding this exploration was not inclusive of all communities.
The low turnout at meetings between the public and Eco Atlantic, who took over the Azinam Group, was disappointing and did not meet the requirement of meaningful public engagement. This is according to Neville van Rooy, Community Outreach Coordinator for The Green Connection, who says the oil rig is allegedly already on its way to Hondeklipbaai from the North Sea. He also told OFM News that community members should be aware of the potential environmental risks oil drilling pose to the community and the fishing industry. Oil spills and oil well blowouts, which are uncontrolled releases of crude oil when pressure release systems fail, will put the community and fishermen at great risk.

After OFM News has sent out a media inquiry, Environmental Impact Management Services (EIMS )/Eco Atlantic agreed to an interview scheduled for next week. This is a developing story.
