Construction of R31 road continues; motorists cautioned─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:47 Wed, 20 Jul 2022
Motorists are warned to lower their speed when approaching the flood-stricken R31 road that’s currently under construction in the Northern Cape.
The spokesperson of the Department of Roads and Public Works in the Northern Cape, Crystal Robertson, requested motorists, including truck drivers, to adhere to instructions from the Stop-and-Go officers and flagmen on site. She cautioned motorists not to speed when passing through the Stop-and-Go traffic control system, which is approximately 1.5 kilometers long. Robertson says that the department has erected speedbumps that will assist with speed control. She also states that department relies on everyone’s cooperation to ensure the safety of motorists and workers on site.
Robertson adds that the department has made considerable progress with the elevation of a section of the R31 in the vicinity of the Wildebeeskuil Pan (Platfontein), just outside Kimberley. She says layering work of the northern lane has already been completed and the traffic has been moved from the emergency gravel lane onto the new tarred lane.
Robertson says that the department is satisfied with the progress on site. She concludes that heavy vehicles are now permitted to pass through the Stop-and-Go traffic control system on the R31 road.
