Matjhabeng protests enter third day─── 15:44 Fri, 22 Jul 2022
Unrest in Bronville entered its third day on Friday.
This follows after the Bronville community and residents of Mandela Park said they have been complaining to their ward Chancellor and the office of the mayor about constant power cuts.
These cuts reportedly sometimes last for days, even when there is no loadshedding scheduled.
Executive Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipa met with the angry protesters on Wednesday evening to intervene.
He told them the cause of Bronville’s electricity crisis is mainly due to illegal connections, and as a result the transformer feeding the area keeps burning down because of overloading. Khalipha made a promise to deploy technicians to restore power as soon as possible.
Khalipha ended by saying a community meeting will be scheduled for next week to provide workable, permanent solutions to the crisis.
Meanwhile, it was reported that three cars traveling en route to Virginia on Thursday were damaged by protesters.
