A multi-million rand project of an old age centre in the North West, in the Podimoe Location in Taung, remains empty despite being completed three years ago.

The Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, revealed that the centre had cost her department a total of R73 064 777,10. She responded to a written question in Parliament, tabled by the EFF's Member of Parliament (MP), Mothusi Kenneth Montwedi, who yanked the issue back into the public eye.

In an answer to his question, Zulu revealed that the province does not have a date set yet for the opening of this old age centre. According to Zulu, the actual opening of the old age centre depends on the appointment of a nursing manager, other nursing personnel, the delivery of furniture in accordance with the norms and standards, including the registration of the facility in terms of the provisions of the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006. All of these processes are still pending.

In answering another question posed by Montwedi, regarding the number of social workers that are currently working for the specified centre, and the time frame, Zulu answered that three social workers have been delivering statutory services at community level since the 2017/18 financial year.
