The Free State MEC for Education has lauded the young lady who was born in the province and was part of the golden generation of Banyana Banyana, which recently won the Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 18-year-old Nthabiseng Majiya has been described as an inspiration to other Free State learners who also wish to become stars one day. As the daughter of a farm worker, she never thought she will become one of these superstars through education.

In his statement, MEC Tate Makgoe partly attributed Majiya’s rise to glory to the Free State Department of Education’s school sports league initiative, of which she is a product. According to Makgoe, the 18-year-old Majiya arrived at the Philippolis Secondary School hostel in the Xharip District in 2019, from Dwarsrivier Farm. He adds that her passion for football saw her emerging as a star that participated in the Free State’s school sports programme.

Makgoe adds that her exploits in the girls’ school soccer team caught the attention of national scouts during the National School Transnet Football Tournament held at the University of the Free State, whilst representing the province. He says Majiya also attracted interest from the Richmond Ladies Football Club in De Aar, in the Northern Cape.

Makgoe stated that the province is overjoyed to have had a representative in the Banyana team that defied all odds in Morocco, in front of vocal home supporters. He concluded that Majiya is a living testimony of departmental officials and teachers who continue to unearth talent at schools.
