Matlosana commits to repay Eskom─── 17:07 Tue, 02 Aug 2022
The North West’s Matlosana Local Municipality in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District has made a commitment to pay money owed to Eskom.
The municipality, together with the Matlosana business chamber, Department of Cooperative Governance, and provincial Treasury held negotiations with the power utility.
This follows after the Johannesburg High Court ruled that Eskom can attach the bank accounts of the municipality, when Matlosana reneged on previous undertakings and ignored two court orders directing it to settle hundreds of millions of rand in unpaid electricity bills.
Matlosana spokesperson, Kelebogile Moleko, told OFM News the municipality together with its stakeholders presented a new proposed repayment plan for Eskom’s consideration, adding the power utility will revert back in due time.
Acting high court judge Grace Goedhart said Eskom is bound by the Public Finance Management Act to take effective and appropriate steps to collect revenue owed to it.
Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance caucus leader in Matlosana - Johannes Le Grange - urges communities in the area to pay their electricity bills, saying those who can't should come forward and make arrangements.
