The deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC), David Mabuza, has officially opened the party's ninth provincial conference at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

Despite delays to start, Mabuza finally opened the conference at around 17:30 yesterday.

The conference has been clouded with rumours of another possible court interdict - this time to stop the entire conference from continuing.

When speaking to delegates, Mabuza says despite challenges experienced, the North West remains the home of the ANC.

He said factions pose a threat to the legacy of the party and urge delegates to refrain from power gain for selfish reasons and corruption.

In his closing remarks, Mabuza said he will inform president Cyril Ramaphosa that he has been to the conference, citing that it is good to experience such a great atmosphere amid challenges faced by the conference.

"I almost forgot how it feels. Seeing members singing, dancing and happy." Mabuza said.

The ANC in the province is set to elect the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), with at least five candidates running for the chairperson seat.

National Executive Committee (NEC) member, Obed Bapela, said the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) officials are allowed to participate in the conference, citing the court ruling only barred them from voting.
