Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says the investigation comes as the suspect died from his injuries whilst admitted at a local hospital after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of angry residents in Jouberton, Extension 1, near Klerksdorp. 

He was allegedly beaten by residents after the girl who went missing on Tuesday, was found inside his shanty in his presence on Wednesday night.

He was then taken to Tshepong Hospital shortly after the assault and later died from his injuries. 

A police van was also set alight by residents after they rescued the suspect from the hands of the angry mob.

One police official was said to have been injured after he was hit with a stone.

Police in the area also announced that they were investigating a case of malicious damage to property.

The girl was taken to the Thuthuzela Care Centre for a medical examination. 

Myburgh says the police have received the results of a medical examination and it confirmed that the 10-year-old victim was raped. 

A case of rape was subsequently opened.
