Another Free State municipality fails to pay workers─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:00 Thu, 25 Aug 2022
The acting Municipal Manager of the Mantsopa Local Municipality, Afrika Masuku, has sent letters notifying employees of the late salary payment for the month of August 2022.
According to Masuku, the late payment is due to unforeseen circumstances that the municipality cannot meet its obligations. He, however, adds that they will pay workers their salaries as soon as they can.
The Mantsopa Local Municipality has been one of eleven municipalities that previously approached the Provincial Departments of Finance and Cooperative Governance (Cogta) for a bailout.
Cogta spokesperson, Sello Dithebe, previously said that municipalities, in their bid to get financial assistance, claim they are experiencing cash flow problems. He said that bailing out these struggling municipalities is not only against the law but is also not sustainable.
